Self regulation is when we’re able to soothe our own nervous systems and we learn this in childhood if we’ve been raised by primary caregivers who have been able to teach us how to self regulate.
We learn to self regulate through co-regulation, and we pick this up from our primary caregivers, parents, teachers, and people who influence us early on in life.
If we haven’t received that co-regulation in childhood, then as adults we may struggle with self-regulation, and that means we can look externally to self soothe. And that might be through a number of ways including various types of addictions, it could be drink, food, alcohol, TV and other distractions to self soothe.
