If we have had trauma in our lives and let’s face it most of us have, we may not feel very well in our bodies. We may not feel at home in our bodies.
This may manifest as rejection, abandonment. We may overeat to hide our bodies. We may abuse our bodies in similar ways as we may have been abused in our childhoods.
There are many ways we can self abandon. We can neglect ourselves, we can feed ourselves the wrong sorts of foods, drink the wrong drinks, avoid activities, avoid movement; we can be distracted all the time and keep ourselves away from ourselves.
However there are ways we can manage this differently. We can stop the self abandonment. We can stop the relating to ourselves in an unhealthy way.
We may not have learned how to do this in childhood. We may have had the wrong attachments styles from our primary caregivers. We may not have received the love we needed in childhood.
And yet as adults now we can change that for the better. We can start to relate to ourselves better, we can start to nourish and nurture ourselves in ways we never had before.
Because the most important relationship we’ll ever have in our lives is the one with ourselves and if we don’t feel good on the inside we will not have a good quality of life on the outside.
