We can be in the stress state where our bodies producing adrenaline and cortisol and that has a specific number of physiological reactions or we can be in the rest and digest state and that has a corresponding other response in the body. So we can career between these states of being.
Stress per say is good for us as we need stress to get up and to get on with our lives, to go about our business, to wake up in the morning and to have that motivation to get up, have a shower, get out to work and get going. This is known as eustress, this is the good stress in our lives.
However the steady state we wish to be in generally is to be in the rest and digest state and unfortunately for people who have had trauma in the past who are experiencing high anxiety, depression, overwhelm, any issues of emotional unease, then this means that the nervous system is wired to react in producing the stress hormones, to defaulting to stress rather than rest and digest.
